Turkish Cypriots raped, killed 67-year-old Andreas Dimitriu says:
men in a Turkish Cypriot village were killed and women were raped by Greek Cypriot soldiers and members of his underground group three decades ago A former member of a Greek Cypriot underground group defending the unification of the island with Greece has confessed in remarks to the media that the group, along with Greek Cypriot soldiers, had raped women and killed men of a Turkish Cypriot village during a campaign of attacks on the Turkish population of Cyprus three decades ago. The group, the National Organization of Cypriot Fighters (EOKA), launched attacks on Turkish Cypriots during the 1960s and early 1970s in a violent campaign aimed at enosis, or unification of Cyprus with Greece. Andreas Dimitriu, a 67 year-old Greek Cypriot who was a member of EOKA-B, an offshoot of EOKA, during the period of ethnic violence on the island, confessed in a media interview that he had helped to gather men of the Turkish Cypriot village of Tohni (Taşkent) in a coffee house. The men were later taken away by EOKA-B members entering the village, and all but one male Turkish Cypriot had been killed, Dimitriu told Greek Cypriot newspaper Alithia on Sunday. He, however, said that he was unaware that the Turkish Cypriot men were to be killed and that he learned their fate a few days afterward. Turkish Cypriot women of the village were then raped by Greek Cypriot soldiers seeking revenge on Turkish Cypriots, he also said. “Such things were happening at that time. What did we do that was different from what was going on all over Cyprus?” he asked. The confessions came after a Turkish Cypriot woman who had survived the Greek Cypriot violence in Taşkent village identified Dimitriu during an earlier interview with the same newspaper as the person who had taken away her father. Her father was among those killed by EOKA-B members in the village. Dimitriu said he had thought the men rounded up in the village's coffee house would be held captive in order to get some Greek Cypriots held by Turkish Cypriots released and said that he had no idea that these men were to be killed. “We were given the instruction to round up all the men capable of fighting to be used for the exchange of Greek Cypriot captives. We did whatever we did together with the legal forces of the state,” Dimitriu said.

So Michael Cacoyannis is admitting there was peaceful coexistence between the two communities, and the ones who ?fired the first shot? were the Greeks. And look at this... he is already making it sound like Enosis was just an excuse for big bad Turkey to move in. When the Greek Cypriots were fanatically massacring the Turks left and right during the 1950s, you had better believe partition was the only way to guarantee their survival... as history has borne out. (After the 1974 coup, coup leader Sampson admitted his plan was to commit genocide against the Turks: "Had Turkey not intervened I would not only have proclaimed <<>> I would have annihilated the Turks in Cyprus." Eleftherotipia, Feb. 26, 1981.)
Even Greek Cypriots sought Turkey's help.
In her memoirs, Greek Cypriot MP Rina Katsellis, says "16th July 1974 Is Makarios alive? Is he dead? The Makarios supporters arrested, the EOKA-B supporters freed... I did not shed a tear, why should I? Did the stupidity and fanaticism deserve a tear? There are some who beg Turkey to intervene. They prefer the intervention of Turkey." 18th July 1974 "My God!...Everyone is frozen with fear..the old man who asked for the body of his son was shot on the spot.. The tortures and executions at the central prison ... everyone is frozen with horror. Nothing is sacred to these people, and they call themselves Greeks! ... we must not keep that name any longer."

Athens Court of Appeal dtd. March 21, 1979: The court decision reads as follows:"The Turkish intervention in Cyprus, which was carried out in accordance with the London-Zurich agreements, was legal. Turkey had, as one of the Guarantor Powers, the right to fulfill her obligation. The true guilty ones were the Greek Officers, who organised the coup and thereby created the conditions for an intervention."
Mother of Mercy! Did the Greek court actually and correctly use the word "intervention," instead of INVASION?
Don't forget, Greeks: You owe Turkey a huge thanks (which some of you gave at the time) for rescuing you from the tyranny of your military junta. If you have ever seen Costa-Gavras' 1969 movie, Z, you will be reminded of the HELL your country suffered through, before the Turks inadvertently saved your necks.

Turkish Cypriots Held Hostage for Eleven Years 1963-1974
For the next eleven years, Turkish Cypriots were held hostage in their own land without representation in a joint government or participation in a joint administration in contravention of the 1960 Treaties.
Turkish Cypriot pleas for protection and assistance were basically ignored by the international community during those eleven years and the U.N. Peace-Keeping Force proved largely ineffective in providing security to the Turkish Cypriots.
The British House of Commons Select Committee on Foreign Affairs reported in July 1987: "There is little doubt that much of the violence which the Turkish Cypriots claim led to the total or partial destruction of 103 Turkish villages and the displacement of about a quarter of the total Turkish Cypriot population, was either directly inspired or certainly connived at by the Greek Cypriot leadership."
The Turkish Cypriots never accepted the Greek Cypriot fait accompli of December 1963. In order to protect themselves from constant Greek threats, and to take care of the political, economic and social needs of their own community started to establish in stages a separate Turkish Cypriot administration.
The Greek Coup d'etat of 15 July 1974 On July 15, 1974, a Greek-sponsored coup backed by thousands of Greek troops ousted the Greek Cypriot administration of Archbishop Makarios as a prelude to the annexation of the island by Greece.
On July 19, 1974, Archbishop Makarios addressed the U.N. Security Council in New York, telling the world that Greece was occupying Cyprus and that both Greek and Turkish Cypriots were in grave danger. In addition to the 103 villages which Turkish Cypriots had lost in 1963, Greek and Greek Cypriot troops occupied 33 more Turkish Cypriot villages. The coupists had killed around 3,000 Greek Cypriots and the leader of the Greek Cypriot Communist Party Mr.Papayoannu is on record saying that 4,000 of his members were on a list of people to be lined up and shot.
With no one else prepared to act, on July 20, 1974, the Republic of Turkey, in accordance with the 1960 Treaty of Guarantee, intervened to protect the Turkish Cypriot Community and to prevent the imminent annexation of Cyprus by Greece and the annihilation of the Turkish Cypriot population.
